THISTLE COMMUNITIES’ BLUE VISTA: A LEADER IN GREEN BUILDING AND ENERGY EFFICIENCY
Blue Vista has won three national and regional awards for planning and green building, including the EPA Energy Star Award for Excellence in 2009. Thistle continues to raise the bar for green healthy affordable homes as Blue Vista homes’ are 35 percent more efficient than a house built to code. The last 28 homes in Phase One are under construction. These “Wee Cottages” are being built to accommodate up to 3.5 KW of solar to provide electric power.

2007 APA Sustainability Planning Award
A member of the City of Longmont’s planning staff nominated Blue Vista for a planning award, for using the highest standards of Smart Growth and Urban Planning. Blue Vista was recognized by the Colorado Chapter of the American Planning Association. Blue Vista received the Sustainability Award for Advancing Green Design and Planning. The committee noted, “The Blue Vista development exhibits an interesting mix of design and social engineering, good collaboration and a high degree of transferability to other communities.”
2008 NAHB Green Development Project of the Year Award, Single Family Attached and Detached Category
Each year, the National Association of Home Builders recognizes individuals, companies and organizations that are ‘bringing green to the mainstream,’ by transforming green design and construction practices. The National Green Building Awards honors achievements in and commitments to green building.

The Energy Star for Homes program ensures that new construction is built to be highly energy efficient and, as a result, comfortable for occupants. Application reviewers for the Awards for Excellence found that Blue Vista has exemplified Thistle Communities' invaluable commitment and dedication to the ENERGY STAR program at a regional/local level and providing energy efficient, affordable housing to an underserved population of the American public.

The City of Longmont Recreation Center, next to the Longmont Museum and Cultural Center, is less than a ten-minute walk from the Blue Vista community. The rec center boasts an indoor running track, weight room with free weights and cable machines and a cardio and aerobics room. For those who enjoy a game of basketball, the center also hosts a multi-court gymnasium. For the rugged outdoorsman, there is a climbing wall. For the aquatic enthusiast, there is a six-lane lap pool, as well as a leisure pool complete with waterslides and a lazy river. After working out, patrons can choose to utilize the in-house steam and dry saunas. The center also hosts events and social soirees in the classroom/party room. Busy parents appreciate on-site babysitting services.

Blue Vista is less than 10 acres away from a diverse shopping experience. Wonderful public schools
The Blue Vista community is only acres away from some of the best public schools in the city of Longmont. Whether your child is bound for elementary, middle or high school, you can be sure that the schools will provide them with the best possible education. Niwot High School has even been authorized to teach the academically rigorous International Baccalaureate Program, which is world renowned for its ability to prepare students for the university and college curriculum. The area is endowed not only with numerous public schools, but a few charter schools well. There are also numerous day-care centers for those parents whose busy schedule does not coincide with the final school bell.
